I have been hearing this author talk about wanting to write this book for years on her podcast. Literally years of waiting and ... it did not disappoint! Full of interesting research, fascinating stories and connective insights, this is the writing book you didn't know you needed. This book is a must for authors but should be read by anyone who wants to understand themselves and others better. Highly recommended.

This isn't just a fantastic book for writers, it's also a deeply introspective exploration of creativity, and even living. The author delves into the topic with an authentic honesty that inspires deep reflection and careful thought. She shines a light into those dark places that we often neglect to look at or have been told never to glance at.

I loved this deeper dive into the darker side of creativity and writing. Where we discover our shadow and turn it into art.
The questions this book asks opened doors that made me look at thing differently, embrace more of myself, and find the courage to write something the both my light and dark side can agree on.

A walk on the dark side...

I picked up the audio version of this book and thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jo talk about her personal journey on the road to writing what she does. I also wanted to read it for personal reasons, too, as I'm venturing off my "usual" genre path into the dark side for my next book. It's been a challenge for me letting some of those doors I've been keeping so firmly closed fly open, and this book is challenging me to loosen my grip and let the shadows in. Thanks for being brave and paving the way, Jo!

Illuminating and insightful

A fantastic and fascinating exploration of the various aspects of shadow that can influence not just how we write, but how we show up in the world. Joanna raises thought-provoking points about how our shadow self affects the different parts of our life. I found the chapters relating to shadow careers, death, and money, particularly interesting. Her helpful reflection prompts at the end of each chapter assisted with processing "the stuff" that ends up coming up. Definitely worth a read if you want to be more authentic in your writing.
