★★★★★Chaunce StantonFor the author attuned to the latest in book marketing how-to's and advice, Joanna Penn is NOT a hidden gem. She is brilliant and well on display! In Audio for Authors, she shares practical and thoughtful guidance based on her own experience and those of her professional colleagues. After reading this, I actually decided against pursuing audio until a later date, so it helped me think through the pro's and con's of audio versus ROI.

★★★★★Lindy CadyFirst off, I love Joanna. In this book she goes into the business aspects, how to prepare yourself , how to market, all the different podcasts, distribution etc. It's not about the nitty gritty actual recording and editing details but about all the other things before it, around it and after it. She covers territory not covered by others which is just as important.

★★★★★Timothy L. Drobnick Sr.Joanna Penn has helped me with many of her books about publishing my own books and audio. This one is just another of her fine products. I recommend it if you want to publish your own audio book.

★★★★★Nancy O'TooleIn 2020, one of the most exciting avenues for authors to explore is audio. Joanna Penn, with over a decade of experience in podcasting, is the perfect person to pen this nonfiction work, which covers the topics of audiobooks, podcasting, and voice technologies.

★★★★★Eli HinzeI’m a long time fan of The Creative Penn. I’ve listened to many of Joanna’s books for indie authors, but this one takes the cake. She talks about everything from dictating a first draft to optimizing for voice search to creating an audiobook and more, all things I’m trying to incorporate in my own author journey. I’m going to purchase the ebook edition as well now, just for my own note taking purposes!

While I have a narrator for my first audiobook, I wanted to read to see any tips for marketing my audiobook. It has some, but this book is mostly for those interested in narrating their own books or creating a podcast. Although the idea of a podcast is familiar to me, I don’t plan on doing a podcast. I do use a bit of my own audio for social media publishing. I’ve done audio interviews. So it’s nice to see that I’m familiar.
very nice, and one of the few books on audiobook production (even though even this one has a bigger part on podcasting than strictly on audiobooks). I particularly liked the final section on marketing your books and audiobooks: a number of locations in them that even i didn't know existed! Very helpful.
Good concept. Don’t podcast and not into tech. So don’t think I was the right target audience. Probably a good read for the target audience.
This is a straightforward, practical guide that will be useful to anyone planning on creating an audiobook. Penn leads you through every step of the process; from choosing the recording technology through to marketing the finished product. If you've ever fancied doing a podcast it's particularly insightful as the author is a popular, well-established podcaster and has a wealth of experience to share.

This book covers all the issues you need to consider when recording an audiobook or podcast. It's a not a detailed primer, so you'd still need to research the topics, but you will know what to look for. There are lots of useful practical tips too - Joanna Penn walks the talk. I bought the large print paperback version, which is very easy to read and often on special offer with Amazon.

It's a good book with valuable content but not as in-depth and as I was looking forward to on the audio side of things. However, It's GREAT and detailed for podcasting...
I appreciated the mix of technical, practical, and inspirational. Joanna covers what editing programs, what mics, business ROI, and reasons why authors need to provide audio books. Voice is huge and only going to get a bigger and bigger piece of the market. This book gave me a crash course from A to Z.
There is no one better positioned to provide authoritative advice on the use of audio for authors than Joanna Penn of The Creative Penn, who brings to bear her practical experience gleaned from the production of her podcast, the narration of her audiobook, her use of dictation, and her other forays into the world of audio. She also applies her futurist bent, keeping tabs on emerging audio trends, such as the increasing use of voice assistants, and what that can mean for content creators. An excellent resource that examines all aspects of audio opportunity.
As a fiction writer interested in narrating my own books and narrating for others, I was excited to hear that Joanna Penn was publishing a book on the topic. I am a regular listener to her podcast, The Creative Penn, and her comfort level with audio is what I wish to cultivate. I have heard her recount her journey through the audio landscape and how she has learned along the way, and it has given me the impetus to research it myself. Her newest book, Audio For Authors: Audiobooks, Podcasting, And Voice Technologies is a fabulous guide to this fast-evolving sector. Audio For Authors: Audiobooks, Podcasting, And Voice Technologies is organized in three logical sections, so if you are more curious about one aspect over another, you can easily find what you are looking for. Joanna also augments her principles with her real-world experiences and lessons learned. I find these examples helpful for boosting confidence in those of us just starting out with audio. Each section is well-organized and thorough in its explanation of the topic, including recommendations and tips to keep in mind. One of Joanna's favorite subjects to keep tabs on is the future of audio. AI technology is poised to make a big entrance into the sector and the advice in this section is something authors should reflect on. I have considered ways that I can incorporate audio into my own writing business to be part of the audio wave that is imminent. I highly recommend Audio For Authors: Audiobooks, Podcasting, And Voice Technologies for anyone interested in adding audio skills to their author platform. In a highly readable, conversational style, Joanna Penn provides more of her informed insight into the world of audio, designed especially for authors. She provides the basics and answers questions you may not even have yet. Well worth the time invested before you pick up a microphone!
As always Joanna Penn delivers lots of useful information. I'm just getting into audio and will be referencing this book. A great starting place.
