As I am in the research phase of my first book, I felt it vital that I take a break from that and reassess what it is I'm doing. And this book help me successfully do that. The day I took to read and meditate on the author`s words have been more productive than a day of unimpeded work on my book. A must read for all modern day aspiring authors.

Bought a digital copy. Massive amount of great advice included in all the important areas authors need to pay attention to, some areas that authors sometimes disregard. Also very motivating. Loved it!

All the great basics to staying grounded as an author -- mind, body, and heart -- and the acknowledgement that a writer's life is difficult. This is a book that resonates because it's written from the direct experience of a successful author.

Joanna Penn knows her stuff when it comes to indie-publishing and I keep in the loop of what's happening in publishing mainly through her books and her podcasts. She has a great way of streamlining and condensing information that would overwhelm some newcomers. This book is a much needed one for me as I need to re-order my life so I can be more productive with my writing. I highly recommend it.

Short but helpful

Another excellent and helpful addition to Penn's non-fiction series for authors! While I wish it was a bit longer and more in-depth on certain subjects (the paperback is roughly 117 pages, with about 20 of those being appendixes), this is a helpful overall guide to productivity as an author/writer. Penn gives guidance and tips on everything from goal-setting and deadlines, to time-blocking and scheduling, to health and proper writing mindsets. There are even a few chapters dedicated to "extras", such as out-sourcing work, dictation, and co-writing. Even though I'm not currently in a place to implement those strategies, I found them interesting and may come back to them as my career grows. As they say, you need to hear the same thing seven times before doing something about it, and while a lot of these tips are familiar (I read productivity books fairly frequently), a few of them finally clicked in a new way. In particular, the section about busy, urgent, and important work was very clarifying. I also appreciate the large appendix of resources Penn included in the back, with lots of links and book titles to research if I want to go more in depth into any of the subjects she touched on. I will be looking into many of them. Overall, a brief but helpful resource for authors looking to make the most of their time!

Figure out your why

This book helps you take a good look at your life (writing and everything else) to figure out your why, your to-do list, your not-to-do list, how to organise and schedule your time, organise your writing, and be more productive.

My biggest take away is to stop trying to do everything at once: focus on one thing and get it done before moving on to something else. Otherwise your mind will be preoccupied anyway.

A great addition to every author’s library.

It's the little things

Joanna Penn is helpful and cares to see other authors succeed in author entrepreneurship. She is a true blessing for novice, intermediate and professional indie authors because this book helps authors to remember that remaining productive is a mindset.

Io la adoro, ascolto sempre il suo podcast e i suoi consigli sono ottimi. Questo libro non svela chissà quale segreto misterioso, ma è un piacevole approfondimento su come essere produttivi in modo migliore.

A hugely inspiring book for authors at all stages of their writing career.

I've been writing for 10 years and have a few fiction and nonfiction titles published, but even for me, the advice in this book was eye-opening. Joanna sets out the ways you can organize your life better in order to write more, how to motivate yourself, but also how to market your books and to make the best of your backlist. Joanna's enthusiasm flies off the pages and makes you want to go and implement her recommendations immediately. (Which I more or less did!) I couldn't recommend this book highly enough.

A solid foundation in how to get your writing done

Joanna Penn is a highly influential voice in the indie publishing world. She was one of the first writers to share her wealth of knowledge via a blog and a podcast and, in addition to her own fiction, publishes non-fiction books for authors. Productivity for Authors is her tenth book for writers, carrying on her long-time tradition of offering straightforward advice in a short-ish, easy-to-digest format. Many writers struggle with finding the time to write, balancing their writing time with admin and marketing time, and reaching their writing goals. (Hey, me too!) Productivity for Authors dives deep into different methods authors can use to overcome all these challenges and more. She also goes into topics like co-writing, setting boundaries, dictation, outsourcing, and productivity tools. (I wish dictation was an option for me but I write far better than I speak.) As an indie author myself who balances a full-time job, blogging, and writing, I found a few helpful tidbits in here but nothing that really inspired me to change up my practices that much. If you’ve read other writing productivity books, there’s no big reveal like “this is the secret to productivity.” That’s because when it comes to book writing, there isn’t one. The biggest and most repeated point in this book is: just do the work and stop making excuses. And Penn is absolutely right about that. If you’re a new writer looking for the basics, this book is a great place to start.
